Safeguard Assessments

A Safeguard Assessment (SA) is an assessment conducted annually to assessment members of departments who are exposed to repeated traumatic situations, content, materials and events as part of their job.  The evaluation consists of a background questionnaire and several screening tools to check for mental health conditions, and assess functioning. Safeguard assessments differ from WWAs as services receive some details regarding the functioning of the member.

Conducted by clinical psychologists

SAs include Clinical interviews conducted by registered psychologists along with psychometric testing. A discussion is held after assessments where results are shared with members and they have an opportunity to review strengths and areas for improvement. Members are not provided with any documentation, but can take notes on details if they wish.

Psychologists conducting these assessments have experience working with public safety personal, in the areas of treatment and assessment. The understanding of service culture, workplace demands, and operational stress injuries often presenting in this population affords critical context in conducting these evaluations.
